In Ecuador, Spanish (aka Castilian) is the language of national communication, which coexists with 14 indigenous languages. The right to learn in one's native language is recognized in the Constitution. The Bilingual Intercultural Education Model, institutionalized at the national level, collects and applies the vision of the nationalities and indigenous peoples to education and learning in schools, family and community. Related to this video, it is important to note that, increasingly, students - who are identified as Latinos by the school system - speak an L1 that is not Spanish. Spanish may be their L2 (or L3!).
